FTC consumer warnings on AI voice-clone 'family emergency' scams

Framework / advisory20 Mar 2023 / 16 Nov 2023

The US Federal Trade Commission issued consumer alerts (notably 'Scammers use AI to enhance their family emergency schemes,' March 2023) warning that AI can now clone a loved one's voice from a short sample, making 'family emergency' and grandparent scams — an impostor posing as a relative in distress and demanding wire transfers, gift cards or cryptocurrency — far more convincing. In November 2023 the FTC announced its Voice Cloning Challenge, a public competition to develop ideas that protect consumers from AI voice-cloning harms, later awarding multiple prizes. The FTC's standard guidance is to hang up and call the person back at a known number, be wary of urgency and untraceable payment methods, and agree on a family 'safe word.' These are authoritative regulator advisories documenting the consumer-protection dimension of voice-clone vishing, complementing the individual incident cases.
