'Nudify' deepfake bot ecosystem on Telegram reaches millions of users

Real-world incident15 Oct 2024

An October 2024 WIRED investigation identified at least 50 Telegram bots offering to produce non-consensual nude and sexual imagery from ordinary clothed photos, with a combined total of more than 4 million monthly users (two bots each had over 400,000). The bots, which overwhelmingly target women and girls, illustrate how commoditised 'nudify' tooling has industrialised AI-enabled non-consensual intimate imagery at scale. Reporting noted that Telegram provided the search, hosting and execution surface that enabled the abuse, and that many jurisdictions lacked specific laws covering non-consensual deepfakes at the time. This case documents the abusive-tooling supply side of the harm rather than a single victim and complements high-profile individual cases. Summarised at policy level only; no tools, prompts or methods are described.
